Topic: Suggestions for Horror Books

Who is reading what?  I am looking for some suggestions for good horror fiction to devour.  What do you suggest?

Re: Suggestions for Horror Books

Thanks for replying, everyone. It appears we have a decent cross-section of people here and a lot of well thought-out discussion.

Re: Suggestions for Horror Books

Anyone looking for book recommends? I can suggest tons of stuff. You can start in the deep, dark past with Sheridan La Fanu, who wrote Camillia, one of the first sexy vampires with lesbian overtones. Algernon Blackwood who took haunted out of the house. SOmething a bit closer to home? Try Shirley Jackson. She wrote the haunting of hill house, We have always lived in the castle (my favorite) the lottery and a ton of short stories. In the sixties and seventies there was Chelsea Quinn Yarborougher Blatty as well as a ton more. COntemporary, you MUST read Bentley Little and John Laymon. Sheesh!  Rick Hautala is probably ok, to, since it's considered the best horror writer out there. I love Fritz Leiber and Richard Christian Matheson.

If you need more, let me know. Print isn't dead, it's undead.

Also, if you want, you can read Best Left Buried when it comes out September 7th gfrom Lyrical press. I wrote that one. :)

Neil Gaiman's American Gods is a perfect blend of horror and real world-based dark fantasy. Joe Hill's Heart Shaped Box is good, too.
