LOS ANGELES, CALIF., December 28, 2010 – Famous Monsters of Filmland announced it’s first annual film competition and showcase: The Imagi-Movies Festival. The company announced the festival will be held at the Plaza Cinemas 14 in Oxnard, California on April 1-3, 2011.
“The Imagi-Movies Festival will celebrate Forrest J Ackerman’s legacy and his devotion to inspiring and evoking the imagination of storytellers,” announced Publisher Philip Kim. “The weekend will be filled with independent works that have been submitted to Famous Monsters alongside a great lineup of special features honoring the filmmakers and actors we have all come to love.”
Along with the independent shorts and features from our submission finalists, the Imagi-Movies Festival will be the first stop in a series of Vincent Price Centennial celebrations in 2011. The celebration will include screenings of Vincent Price’s films, a presentation by his daughter Victoria Price, and special tributes from guests.
Also featured at the festival is a Famous Monsters and The H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival compilation of Lovecraft films in honor of one of horror’s iconic writers. Another highlight will be a Stephen King Dollar Babies. Throughout the weekend we will showcase independent films based on the author’s short stories. Writers and directors from Stephen King’s feature films will also be present. Upcoming horror films such as Universal’s The Thing will be showing exclusive previews.
Filmmakers can still submit their short films, feature films or screenplays for the competition via Withoutabox and at Imagimovies.com by February 28th, 2011. Event tickets are now available for sale and sponsorship opportunities are now open. “We’re honored to be holding the first Imagi-Movies Festival in the new year,” added Kim. “The film premieres still to be announced and celebrity guests we have planned are sure to be a hit for the fans!”

The Museum of Arts and Design presents the film series

in conjunction with its acclaimed exhibition Dead or Alive.

The film series Zombo Italiano: The Italian Zombie Film Movement will run from July 8 through July 29 at MAD, located at 2 Columbus Circle in New York City. The MAD Theater will screen 10 works by a generation of directors, some celebrated, some obscure, who through their pioneering special effects pushed the boundaries of low-culture and gore to deal brutally and humorously with the body at its most material, while offering a grotesque but poetic vision of nature and humanity. The films include cult classics by Lamberto Bava, Jorge Grau, Lucio Fulci, Pier Paolo Pasolini, George A. Romero, and Michele Soavi. On the evenings of July 8 and 9, Roger Ma and the Zombie Combat Club will provide a pre-film demonstration of essential combat skills for surviving encounters with the living dead. Among the subjects covered will be: anatomy, weapons, martial techniques, and common misconceptions concerning how to confront a ravenous walking corpse.

with David Emge, Ken Foree, Scott H. Reiniger, and Gaylen Ross

Famous Monsters 250, 251, new Ray Bradbury, FM Con, and more. . .

Greetings all,

I just wanted to swing by and let everyone know what’s going on in the Famous Monsters universe. The magazine (issue 251, published by indie comic giant IDW) has officially gone on pre-sale over at our store (www.captainco.com ). We’ve got the Captain Company exclusive (yup, we secured the name and are changing the logos and URL’s this week) FM 251 Basil Gogos variant cover. It’s got old school (Karl Freund) and new school (Predators, Charlain Harris) horror. For the sci-fi and fantasy fans we’ve got a massive Ray Bradbury interview along with a never-before-published story by the man himself, and much, much more- including the last editor’s letter written by Forry to be included in the magazine when it returned, as he always knew it would. The mag is also going to be available with the Richard Corben/Nosferatu primary cover and the William Stout/Frankenstein comic shop incentive cover.

In celebration of the magazine release we’re also holding the FM Con in Indianapolis, IN July 9-11. We’re going to have reunions for Dawn/Day of the Dead, Night of the Living Dead, Return of the Living Dead, The Lost Boys with a tribute to Corey Haim, Thomas Jane and Tim Bradstreet talking movies and their comics company, pre-sale of issue 251 with an exclusive convention cover, a VIP party featuring an amazing (and still top secret) guest, Charles Band Road Show, a Repo! screening with writer/creator Terrence Zdunich sitting right along with you and taking questions, screenings of unreleased and independent horror films, panels with many of the guests, tattoo contest, a beauty contest to find our FM girl who will then get a feature spread in the Halloween issue, and too much more to list. Details are over at www.famousmonstersconvention.com. Also be sure to check out www.facebook.com/fmconvention. If you want to attend or are a vendor looking for a booth, check it out soon before the early sale period closes and prices go up.

We get a lot of questions pertaining to the disappearance of issue 250. Many people ordered 250 through the previous owners of FM but had never received it. We have remedied that problem. We will be taking over the production and printing of issue 250. For all the sordid details and how to get your copy if you had ordered it already, head on over to our forums here: http://famousmonstersoffilmlandforum.com/index.php?topic=27.0

FM is also working its way through the social media. To get a somewhat distilled version of the website and get announcements as they go out www.facebook.com/FMOFL is where you need to be. Looking for discounts to our store and special giveaways? www.twitter.com/FMOF is where to find them.

The response has been great so far and we appreciate all the support. Many thanks from all of us. If you’ve got questions or comments you want answered quickly, head on over the Facebook page. We’ve usually got that monitored most of the day. Thanks again,

FM Crew
